Kate Oakley is a policy analyst and professor at the City University of London and Queensland University of Technology in Australia.
Her interests as a scientist are directed at research of creative industries, regional growth, cultural politics and corresponding labour markets. For instance concerning cultural labour markets, she is currently working on a study, which seeks to understand their changing work patterns over a 70-year period.
Oakley was the prime author of the Creative London Report, and has worked with a number of cities and regions on public policy in the creative industries in Britain and abroad. With Charles Leadbeater he has written the books The Independents (2000) and Surfing the Long Wave (2001), which became of the first and main declarations of the new idioms in creative industries. Her last book is Better Than Working for a Living?, which is based on her recent critical study on festival management.
